If you were anything like me, you are probably wondering what the heck Steampunk is. I've heard of the typical literature genres - Sci-Fi, Adventure, Romance, Fantasy - but where did Steampunk come from? Was it around forever? Or did it jump on the Paranormal Teen Literature bandwagon that has rollered through this generation and has turned bright eyed youth into shells of wasted potential?
(I joke. Who doesn't enjoy that genre of guilty pleasures?)
Anyway, I rather fell upon Steampunk by finding whole series of these genres by what I like to call, the Queen of Steampunk herself, Gail Carriger. I had read her adult novel, "Parasol Protectorate" series and was duly interested. When I continued my venture onwards, I came upon her teen novel series, "Finishing School" and was thoroughly hooked.
So what is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction/fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by the 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.
Cool, right?
It makes you want to pull out your corsets and full skirts, hide a few daggers in your parasol and ridiculous hat, and go out to assasinate the High Duke in a floating balloon contraption.
Gail Carriger takes Steampunk to new levels. I encourage anyone who has a penchance for strong female leads, adventure, mystery and intrigue to read her "Finishing School" series. But why does Gail Carriger stand out from the rest of the authors in the Steampunk genre? Well, she creates a new genre upon herself - a steampunk paranormal genre - that seeks to understand if paranormal creatures were part of standard 19th-century society, what on earth would that look like?
If you can't imagine it, I highly suggest you start the series. :)
